‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ film knocks critics to the curb

Last night I watched the film Bohemian Rhapsody. I tried to hold my bias in check because the music of Freddie Mercury and Queen remain among my all time favorites. I didn’t know what to expect. After all, some critics have shredded the film and Bryan Singer, the film’s director, has been dealing with a series of allegations about his sexual activities.

Gunboat Diplomats recording group serves up Christmas cheer with new song

Ok. I’m a sucker for a Christmas song. My daughters know this too well. I’m always bugging them to learn more Christmas songs. Sometimes they accommodate me, sometimes they don’t. So it made my day this morning to get an upbeat, kicking Christmas tune in my email from Gunboat Diplomats.

Gunboat Diplomats latest: Paean to summertime pop

With Gunboat Diplomats, you never know what to expect. These musicians recording as a group, who perform in a variety of venues and bands, including solo acts, most definitely embrace variety. The last song, “Original Sin”, was described as “a bastardized bossa nova.” I liked that song, bastardization or not. The latest from GD is a sharp turn compared to past recordings, however.

Music did the talking and boosted Paradise Outlaw to big win

Paradise Outlaw guitarist Kevin Langeland said in an email interview for an earlier column that his band lets their music do the talking. That approach paid off big time when the band won the coveted B93 Battle to the Bash celebration in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The band’s music got radio play as a result of that win, and the exposure was no small feat. B93 (WBCT) is the most powerful radio station in North America. Where does the band go from here?

After nearly a decade, Queen biopic set for release and a dustup

I have long been an admirer of Freddie Mercury and Queen. I put Mercury right up there with Elvis in terms of his impact on music. Who’d have ever thought a popular band could successfully stick opera smack in the middle of a pop song running about six minutes long? Now the long-awaited biopic of Mercury and his band Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody, is set for release. There’s a dustup of course. And in the US, we’ll have to wait on the Brits and Aussies’ release before we see the film.

Tragic death for vocalist, but ‘Fairytale’ endures as epic song

“Fairytale of New York” was among the first songs I chose for my new ‘Set List’ page here at Indie Art South. I’m slightly obsessed with that song. My daughters will confirm that claim, having witnessed me listening to it so many times. It finally occurred to me to learn more about the female vocalist Kirsty MacColl. The song has a small nuance of hope in the lyrics. Sadly, MacColl’s life ended in tragedy. I had no idea.

Indie band Blackberry Smoke tops in country album sales—for third time

If you don’t know the music of Blackberry Smoke, lend this indie band your ear. The band’s latest release, Find a Light, outsold other country albums to take the top spot. As the website Saving Country Music pointed out, this is for album sales as opposed to sales from all sources including streaming.

Jamey Johnson joins bevy of special guests for Skynyrd ‘Farewell’ tour

Jamey Johnson will join other special guests along the way as legendary band Lynyrd Skynyrd conducts the Last of the Street Survivors Farewell Tour presented by SiriusXM. The first show kicks off on May 4 in West Palm Beach (FL). Skynyrd has performed for four decades, with more than 60 albums produced. Most working musicians encounter Skynyrd at live events, although not in the flesh.
