In North Florida there’s something for everyone to do when it comes to leisure time. You can opt to hear live music, go to a dinner theater, and inspect papers related to Charles Darwin’s theories. From the beaches to downtown, we’ve highlighted some events. Want to dance in the streets? Read on!

Chuck Nash can frequently be found doing music in our region, and he has two events coming up. Tonight Chuck does tunes at South Kitchen in Nocatee Town Center tonight from 8-11 PM. On Saturday, Aug. 10, Chuck will be at Taps Bar and Grill in St. Johns County from 9 PM-12 midnight.*** It’s been awhile since I’ve seen Chuck, but he is incredibly talented. If you’re looking for good music, check out his shows.

In the mood to dress up and go big city? Head to the Alhambra Theatre. I love this place. The food is good and the shows are amazing. Current show is Mama Mia! Going to the Alhambra is one of the best things you can do for a special night on the town.

Over in Jacksonville Beach the Friends Trivia Bar Crawl will attract a lot of people. I have two ‘Friends’ addicts in my family, and I admit, I’ve seen reruns of this show pretty often and it still makes me laugh even when I know what’s coming. This event is hosted by Crawl with Us, and the Events page indicates the trivia takes place at 4 different bars. Learn more by visiting the Crawl with Us announcement.

Downtown has lots going on, with a major celebration in the Jax Caribbean Carnival. This celebration runs through Sunday, and it features a “parade of costume bands dancing in the streets”, live performances, and wares available from vendors.

Also downtown, Lyle Lovett and his Large Band perform at The Florida Theatre Friday, Aug. 9.

In the mood for more serious pursuits? Learn more about the man whose work has influenced science in countless ways. Did you know Charles Darwin, like some others in his day, married his cousin? The Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum features a current exhibit on Darwin’s work, ‘Darwin: On the Origin of Species and Other Matters’.

On the West side of Jax, the band LIFT will, in their own words, be “rocking a new venue” on Saturday, Aug. 10, at Rascal’s Pub. Mike Hamilton, a talented photographer well known to many bands in Jax, has highly recommended this band to me often. I haven’t been able to catch their show—it’s a challenge for me to do that sometimes because of my travel schedule and my travel with the band. But Mike’s word is good enough for me.

Close to home, our band has the weekend off, and Rebecca will spend even more time getting ready for her show in West Palm Beach August 28. The Daysies’ next Jacksonville show is at Hemming Park next Friday, Aug. 16—Rebecca will do this one solo.

If you’re looking for fun, North Florida has many events for you to choose from. Head out to hear live music or dance streetside at the Caribbean Carnival, among other pursuits, and whatever you choose, be safe and have fun.

***Original venues and times posted for Chuck Nash were edited and have changed.
