Miranda Lambert is one artist who never ceases to surprise. Lambert just debuted a song I’d say leans to punk country, and she’s celebrating finding homes for her “mutts”—all 61 of them.
The new song, “Locomotive”, is pure Miranda, with a driving rhythm and her trademark robust vocals. Heavy on guitar and a big sound all around, the song features lyrics possibly responding to critics of her surprise marriage. Wide Open Country opined:
“It comes across as a love song for Lambert’s husband Brendan McLoughlin and a middle finger to critics of their whirlwind romance. As a punk rocker should, Lambert gets her point across with humor. The line “he gives me wings” might be literal, because she’s “sweet tea sippin’ / On my front porch sittin’ / While my hubby fries chicken …”
Let me pause to applaud men who cook. I know many.
Lambert presented the song for the first time at Nissan Stadium during the Country Music Association festival (CMA Fest) in Nashville this past weekend. Wide Open Country has the video of Lambert. In a venue that large, it’s hard to get the acoustics perfect, but you can get a general idea about the song from the video.
On her Twitter page, Lambert thanked fans for coming to the festival, and she celebrated a milestone—her MuttNation charity succeeded in finding homes for 61 dogs. She thanked everyone who came by the MuttNation booth at the festival too:
“What a weekend! Thanks to the amazing fans for celebrating country music & mutts with us! Thanks @CountryMusic & everyone who participated in the #muttnationmarch, stopped by the @muttnation booth & took home a rescue. We got all 61 adopted! Can’t wait to see y’all on the road!”
Fans responded, including one individual, Kourt Dugan, whose adopted pet Schnauzer looks like a twin to my daughter Rebecca’s adopted Schnauzer. Dugan said got the “favorite little nugget” from MuttNation two years ago.
I’ve dubbed Miranda Lambert the current queen of country for many reasons. Her ability to keep the spirit of country in every one of her songs while trying new rhythms and arrangements outshines just about every other performer in the genre.
Lambert is a huge favorite among those who come out to hear the Daysies. If they do a Lambert song at a venue, you can count on applause and foot stomping.
Hat tip to Lambert for helping all those pups find forever homes.
