HBO sets ‘Deadwood’ release date; most regulars return

If you’re a fan of the TV series ‘Deadwood’, you’ll understand enthusiasm for the forthcoming HBO film based on that series. I mentioned this film to my daughter this morning, and her response came across as your standard hallelujah. A cast of very talented actors converged to be part of the film, and if you check out the trailers, this looks like it will be vintage ‘Deadwood’ with an update set in the time after South Dakota became a US state.

HBO announced the returning cast members:

“Ian McShane (Al Swearengen), Timothy Olyphant (Seth Bullock), Molly Parker (Alma Ellsworth), Paula Malcomson (Trixie), John Hawkes (Sol Star), Anna Gunn (Martha Bullock), Dayton Callie (Charlie Utter), Brad Dourif (Doc Cochran), Robin Weigert (“Calamity” Jane Canary), William Sanderson (E.B. Farnum), Kim Dickens (Joanie Stubbs) and Gerald McRaney (George Hearst).”

I rarely watch anything on regular TV, and I rarely watch much on networks like HBO. I will watch this film, though. I loved the original series, and McShane and Olyphant are among my favorite actors. Also of note is Robin Weigert—she made the character of Calamity Jane her own.

Missing will be Ricky Jay who not only contributed as a writer in the series’ first season but also played the card shark Eddie Sawyer. In real life, Jay was a renowned magician. Jay passed away in 2018.

The film will air on HBO May 31.

I’ll watch TV that night. Most nights, I prefer to read.
